Volunteers to Provide Diabetes Educate

Diabetes kills thousands of Americans each year. Now there's a program to help reduce the presence of the disease in some communities. Health professionals and community leaders gathered at Memorial Health to launch the new program, designed to lessen the number of Hispanics and African Americans with diabetes.

Twenty-five volunteers were recently trained to educate and motivate people with the disease to lead healthier lifestyles.

"Those volunteers will work with doctors and nurses and serve as bridges to healthcare information the doctors and nurses are giving, and reinforce those education messages directly with patients and offer moral support as people are making changes in their life," said Julia Portale with Pfizer Health Solutions.
