One Defendant Cleared of Murder, Sentenced for Robbery

One of two men arrested in the shooting death of a Savannah man has been found not guilty of murder by a Chatham County jury, but will still spend time behind bars.

Ronnie Valentine was accused of killing 42-year-old Ervin Law last May 19. Yesterday a jury acquitted him on the murder charge, but found him guilty of burglary.

Prosecutors said Valentine followed Law into a house belonging to Law's friends on Rogers Street. Valentine was accused of pulling a gun on Law and trying to rob him. But a fight broke out when Law grabbed the gun and three shots were fired. When police and an ambulance arrived, Law was dead from gunshot wounds.

A judge sentenced Valentine to 20 years for the burglary.

Willie Lidell, 21, was also charged with the murder. His trial is pending.
