A Savannah man has been honored for his heroic efforts in helping police catch a criminal. Last month, Tony Maye drove up on a burning building along Ogeechee Road in Chatham County and saw a man throwing tires onto the fire. Maye stepped in and detained the suspect himself until police showed up.
The man has since been arrested and identified as Tito Vega. He's facing arson and murder charges after investigators found a body inside the building.
Maye says he was just doing what he thought was right. "I knew that obviously he was in the act of committing a crime, so I just wanted to hold him until the police got there and were able to take him away," said Maye.
SWS Results organized the event, and presented Maye with a plaque. The Guardian Angels and Savannah City Council also honored him.
