Marine Base Concerned About Proposed Annexation

Some growing pains in the Low County, with expansion plans. The City of Beaufort's growing, and trying to annex 5,000 acres of land, including Clarendon Farms in Gray's Hill and McLeod Farm in Seabrook. That could add up to 16,000 homes to the city. But.

The land is close to Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, and they're concerned about crowding.

"The city annexation itself doesn't concern us, except that it tends to accelerate development a little bit and accelerate the timeline, means more development close to where our aircrafts operate," said Col. Robert Lanham, commanding officer at the MCAS. "The air station isn't against growth at all. We know it's coming, we just need to make sure the development is consistent with how we operate our planes."

City council approved the plan on first reading, but put off the second and final readings to study the base's concerns and the impact the development would have on the city.

We'll let you know what happens next.
