Search Continues For Altamaha Fisherman

Rescue workers and volunteers are still searching for a missing Long County boater. He and two others hit the water yesterday and no one's seen him since.

People from Long and Wayne Counties have been searching along the Altamaha River between Ludowici and Jesup for more than 24 hours. Two 3rd ID soldiers along with one of their wives went fishing Monday and their boat capsized.

Lieutenant Colonel Jody Petery of the 3rd ID was one of those searching for the 29 year old missing soldier just back from Iraq, "The unit are like family some of the brothers have been involved in this accident so they are here now to resolve it."

Authorities aren't releasing the missing man's name yet. Crews have been searching for more than 24-hours and are now calling this a recovery mission rather than a rescue. "He just got back from Iraq on January 6th and yesterday was Presidents Day and they were just out here trying to relax and fish and then something like this happens it is very tragic," says Bobby White of the Department of Natural Resources.

White says the chances of finding the soldier are slim because the water is so cold, "Eyewitnesses said they saw him go under and there's no chance for survival."

Even though the search could take days, the DNR says they'll stay as long as it takes.
