Former Benedictine Football Player Charged in Naval Academy Rape

Former Benedictine star and current Navy quarterback Lamar Owens has been charged with rape. Owens starred at Benedictine as a running quarterback and later became a star for the Naval Academy.

The former WTOC Player of the Week led Navy to an 8-4 record this past season, including a victory over Colorado State in the Poinsettia Bowl.

Owens is accused of raping a female midshipman in her dorm room last month. While the Naval criminal investigation team handles the case, Owens will continue to attend classes and perform other duties.

"It is a blow to the Academy, and the midshipmen," said the Naval Academy's Cmdr. Rod Gibbons. "But we go to great lengths to inform everybody here at the Naval Academy that the Navy's policy is one of no tolerance for sexual assault, harassment, and misconduct."

The military academies have been under scrutiny after several incidents of sexual assault. Because the incident happened on academy grounds, Owens' case will be handled under military law.
