Man Shot During Struggle with Police

West Bay Street West Bay Street

For the second time in less than a week, a Savannah-Chatham police officer shot a suspect who police say threatened the officer with a weapon.

Shortly after 11pm last night, Officer Jorge Tupac-Yupanqui saw a man acting suspiciously behind a takeout restaurant on West Bay Street. The officer called for back up and then tried to question the man. The man began resisting officers and police say a struggle began and the man pulled a knife.

That's when Officer Tupac-Yupanqui pulled his gun and demanded several times that the man drop the knife. The man refused and lunged toward the officers. Tupac-Yupanqui fired twice, and the man was hit.

He was rushed to Memorial Health and into surgery. As is standard policy, the officer has been placed on administrative leave until the investigation is completed.

The name of the wounded man has not yet been released.
