Coalition Calls for More Qualified BOE Candidates

Would you have to be an educator, or even well educated, to be on the board of education? The answer might surprise you. Almost anyone qualifies.

But some want to change that. The newly formed Chatham Coalition for Education is taking shape. Their goal is to raise the bar for the board of education, by encouraging more qualified people to run for the seats. They have a list of criteria, and they're actively recruiting.

"We think the school board now has reached a point in our city and public education is such a vital part of our future that we can't rely on just the luck that someone might step forward," said coalition member Bob Colvin. "We need to make certain qualified people are stepping forward, are available, and are running for these seats."

They'll host an open forum next month, and a candidates workshop in April. Ideally, they'd like to see ten qualified candidates running for the five open seats.
