Claxton Rattlesnake Round Up

Thousands of people spent Saturday in Evans County for a one of a kind spring celebration.

Crowds slithered over for the 39th Annual Claxton Rattlesnake Roundup. The event is put on by the Evans County Wildlife Club and there's a reason the reptiles are the stars. The festival originally started with hunters who gathered the snakes for their venom that's used to make snake bite antidote. Since then they've turned it into a real community affair, adding arts and crafts, entertainment and a parade.

President of the Wildlife Club, Gibby Barnes, said, "75 percent of the money raised goes back into the community. We use 25 percent to keep the festival going, but the rest goes for everything from scholarships to different clubs."

The Claxton Rattlesnake Roundup is an annual event that draws spectators from all over the south east.
