Scientists Study Whale Carcass Found on Hilton Head Island

A killer whale is the talk of Hilton Head Island. The carcass of a pygmy killer whale washed up on the beach this weekend. Scientists say the whale was between 2 and 5 years old and died long before it washed ashore.

According to scientists, this is only the fourth recorded whale of this type to be found in the state, and the first one Charleston's Ocean Service has been able to study.

"I was very surprised because I hadn't seen one in the 26 years," said Nancy Polk Weckhorst, who volunteers with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. "I didn't realize at the time it was so special."

Close to 45 animals wash up on South Carolina beaches every year.
