Board to Consider Later Start to School Year

When do your kids start school? The Savannah-Chatham County Board of Public Education may want to change some dates. Plenty of parents say students go back too soon, in early August. So superintendent Dr. Thomas Lockamy wants the board to consider pushing that start date back to right after Labor Day.

Dr. Lockamy said the plan is "to move the school year slightly back to accommodate the long summer, the hot weather that occurs in August and to really start students immediately after Labor Day, and so the end of testing would come later in May."

If they decide to make the changes, it won't be until the 2008 school year.

The board also talked about putting all high schools on the same block schedule so students would all have the same credits, and it would be easier to transfer.

We'll let you know what they decide to do.
