Top Teacher--Martyne Rea

We've all had some great teachers during our scholastic journey. But some go that extra mile, going beyond just books and tests to help their students learn and grow.

Martyne Rea, a sixth grade science teacher at Savannah Christian Preparatory School, is joining forces with her students to fight cancer.

"I like interacting with the kids," she said.

And she does it well. In fact, her curriculum is based on activities she and the students can do together. "We do bookwork, we read, we watch movies," she said. "But we try to do a lot of other things, because science is exciting and you want to try to explore."

Today's assignment is one that is not so traditional. "They're making a flip book to show the super continent Pangea," Rea explaned. "And it will show it's moved apart. It'll be an animated book and the continents will spread apart."

It's an assignment the kids really seem to enjoy. But this teacher is much more. Rea isn't one of those teachers that just teaches; she also has a personal connection to the students.

Students like Lauren Olesen. The two have teamed up on a huge project. "My dad has cancer, so I did Relay for Life," said Lauren. "When I came to school this year, she was one of the people in charge of helping with Relay for Life."

They're heading up the school's Relay for Life team to help fight cancer.

Rea says it is what she's supposed to do for her students. "I love them all," she said. "I think God just gave me the gift to just love the students."

Martyne Rea, this week's WTOC Top Teacher.
