Health Department Reaches Out to Preschoolers

Washing your hands is one of the most important things you can do to stay healthy. For adults, it can come easy. But remembering to properly wash your hands can sometimes be hard for little kids. That's why the Chatham County Health Department is teaching them the ins and outs of hand washing.

Health workers spoke to preschoolers at the Childcare Network, Inc., in Savannah this morning, showing them the proper way to sneeze and cough into your arm. And teaching them that they should wash their hands with soap for as long as it takes to sing the happy birthday song.

"The earlier you start with the health messages, the more engrained they are, the more it's second nature to them," said Christina Pasa with the health department. "It's not something they have to think about."

Health department officials also used a black light to show kids what their hands look like before and after they wash them properly.
