Former Police Officer Investigated in Gambling Ring

Town officials in Port Royal, South Carolina, say state agents are investigating a former city police officer for his possible involvement in an illegal video poker operation.

In March, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division opened its investigation into former Port Royal police captain Roger Karr. He resigned two months earlier, after an internal investigation prompted an arrest of his fiancee Kathy Byers.

SLED shut down the Old Coffee Shop in Port Royal and another spot in Burton for operating illegal video gaming machines.

Byers is accused of running the shop in Burton and Port Royal officials say Karr failed a lie detector test while being asked about the operation.
