Southern LNG Seeks to Expand Elba Island Facility

You've seen the giant tanks standing on the Savannah River, either from a distance or in our Skycam shots. They're for liquid natural gas storage on Elba Island. Now they want to build two more.

Southern LNG wants to add 400,000 cubic meters of storage and make room for larger ships to deliver the LNG. Last night, there was a chance for people to comment on the expansion plans at the Comfort Inn and Suites in Pooler.

"We're always concerned about the public input on any kind of expansion on the waterways, whether it be a large-scale LNG facility or a small-scale marina," said Lt. Andy Meyers with the Coast Guard. "There's always going to be an opportunity for the public to comment."

If Southern LNG gets the go-ahead, the expansion could be complete in about six years.
