Another Bloomin' Festival Comes to Metter

One community spends one Saturday a year celebrating its foliage. There's hardly a sign in Metter than doesn't have flowers on it. Azaleas and dogwoods cover the town each spring.

"I don't think you could go to another small town and find a place more beautiful than Metter," said Marcia Rigdon with the local chamber of commerce.

But 13 years ago, the name for Another Bloomin' Festival wasn't for the sights.

"The South is known for festivals," noted  Rhonda Hendrix, who sits on the festival committee. "Pernal Franklin, a dear friend and a founding member of the committee, said, 'Let's just call it Another Blooming Festival,' and it stuck."

Thirteen years later, the day gets busier and busier. "The entertainment usually starts at 9 or 10, but this year we're starting at 8:30 with the Sunshine Squares," said the festival committee's Jean Melton.

All the orange spray paint on asphalt isn't for a car wreck. It marks off the spaces for arts and crafts or food booths. There are 386 spots, and they'll need every one come Saturday.

Held each Easter weekend, the festival serves as a reunion of sorts. "I graduated high school here in 1978," said Hendrix. "And this is the weekend I see friends and classmates I won't see until next year at Another Bloomin' Festival."

But the ladies say, even if you're not from here, you're welcome here any day, and especially on Saturday.

The festival includes a motorcycle ride, a flower show, an Easter egg hunt and much more. Here's a schedule:

Kiwanis Club Bike Ride, 7:30am, Candler Co. Courthouse, entertainment begins at 9am
BB&T Egg Hunt, at Metter-Candler Rec. Dept., 10am
Poker Run, 1st bike out at 10am from B&M Pools Poker Run Bike Show, 1:30pm-3pm
Flower Show, 1pm-4pm, the Depot
Arts/crafts and food booths, all day
