Two Arrested in Highway Homicide

Two people are in custody and one on the run in Evans County tonight after a homicide on a highway. It happened in eastern Evans County along Daisy Nevils Highway, two miles north of US 280, near the Canoochee River.

Just after 8pm last night, someone spotted an overturned car on the highway. When sheriff's deputies arrived, they found a man they believed to be the driver dead near the car. But from the start investigators didn't believe the crash killed him.

They said distance the body was from the vehicle, as well as some of the injuries, we suspicious. Those wounds included a blow to the back of the head.

By morning, they had suspects Erasto Ramirez, Pedro Nieto in custody, with a third suspect, Jose Ayala, still on the loose.

Deputies and GBI agents spent the early hours questioning a second man who had escaped the crash after he said the car was forced from the highway.

With the physical evidence collected, communications now becomes a barrier. With help from the district attorney's office, the sheriff's department is trying to find translators for each defendant and witness, because none of them speak English.

If you have any information in this case, please call the Evans County Sheriff's Department at 912.739.1611 or your local authorities.
