Apartment Gutted in Early-morning Fire

Just after 4am this morning, Southside firefighters were called out to Bull River Plantations off Johnny Mercer Boulevard on Wilmington Island for the report of an apartment on fire. When firefighters arrived, they spotted smoke and flames coming from the first story of one apartment building.

The resident who called in the fire says her refrigerator caught fire. She and her son were able to get out without injury.

Firefighters quickly got the blaze under control, but the apartment was gutted. They say an electrical problem is the cause.

The Red Cross is helping the two displaced people find somewhere to stay until they can get a new place to live.
