What Student Uniforms Will Look Like

It's already been decided that students in the Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools will be wearing uniforms, but what will they look like?

Next year students at Southwest Middle School won't be wearing jeans and T-shirts instead it will be a solid colored pairs of pants and a solid colored shirts. Bernadette Ball-Oliver, principal at Southwest Middle School, said, "We looked at what would be standard khaki pants navy pants and black options and then standard top would be white."

Principal Ball-Oliver is on the school uniform committee, and says they have selected simple affordable uniforms for their students. And that selection included a student vote. They decided that, in addition to white shirts, they'll also get to wear burgundy or blue ones.

"I think it's going to put the focus on what it needs to be which is instruction and receiving their education," said Principal Ball-Oliver.

However, Superintendent Dr. Thomas Lockamy says that the purpose of the uniform policy is to minimize disruption and identify trespassers on school grounds. So what do students think about the policy?

Middle school student Raven Jamerson says she likes the idea. "I'm very excited about the uniforms. I grew up with uniforms in elementary and it's very comfortable to me."

So does 12-year-old Kyle Winningham. "At first I was against it, but when I started hearing more about it and slowly getting used to it, I think it's a good idea," he said.

A good idea that both teachers and students think will improve education and allow students to worry about their school work instead of the latest clothing trends.
