Third Highway Homicide Suspect Back in Evans County

The third man accused in a roadside murder is back in local custody. Evans County deputies brought Jose Ayala back from South Carolina this morning after police arrested him near Florence yesterday.

Authorities believe Ayala and two other men forced Juan Salas and another man off the road last Thursday night and then beat Salas to death.

Deputies have now learned this isn't Ayala's first brush with the law.

"He was deported in December of '04," said Randall Tippins with the Evans County Sheriff's Department. "Immigration picked him up then and we've had him in jail on misdemeanor charges under a different name."

Magistrate Judge Larry Anderson denied bond for Ayala. His next hearing will be before a Superior Court judge.
