Fire Destroys Garden City Home

Nearly 30 firefighters fought back the flames. Nearly 30 firefighters fought back the flames.

A Garden City family is homeless after a fire destroyed their home on Saturday morning. Firefighters were called out to the house on Silk Hope Road around 7:30 in the morning. They found flames shooting from the roof. Nearly 30 firefighters from Southside Fire and Garden City Fire pulled their forces together to fight back the flames.

Fire investigators say an overloaded extension cord in a rear bedroom sparked, catching a bed on fire. The home's renter, Anthony Lavallias, said he woke up to a house full of smoke and flames and had just enough time to take care of what mattered most.

"The only thing I could do was just grab my kids, make sure they got out the house and then I ran back inside to see whatever I could get," explained Lavallias. "The only thing that came to my mind was this bag, this bag that I have contains my children's medication and everything."

Richard Kilpatrick was driving home from work when he spotted the flames and called for help.

"I came back through," Kilpatrick said, "and I saw these flames and I hit 9-1-1 on my phone. I was like, I couldn't believe that."

It only took firefighters six minutes to get to the fire. The American Red Cross Savannah chapter is helping Anthony Lavallias, his wife, their three kids and Anthony's father-in-law.

If you'd like to help, you can contact the American Red Cross. The Garden City Police Department is also accepting clothing donations for the family. You can drop off donations at: 100 Main Street, Garden City, GA 31408.
