National Guard Part of President's Plan for Border Security

The 48th Brigade of the Georgia National Guard, just returned from Iraq, may be off for a while, but other guard units may soon be heading to the Mexican-US border.

President Bush wants to use the National Guard to patrol the area in an effort to keep immigrants from coming to America illegally.

Brig. Gen. Stewart Rodeheaver from the 48th Brigade says this isn't a new idea, and the National Guard is ready.

"It's a concept we have heard before," he said. "To support marshals in an intelligence function is not something that has been defined, but this is the first time we are getting a solid mission."

President Bush will talk about his plans for the border patrol tonight in a nationally televised speech. You can watch his speech on WTOC at 8pm.
