Memorial Health Unveils Telemedicine Program

For people living in rural communities, going to the doctor can sometimes mean traveling more than an hour away. But thanks to new technology, those days may be over.

Yesterday, Memorial Health, along with the Georgia state insurance commissioner, John Oxendine, officially kicked off the hospital's telemedicine network. The program will allow patients in rural areas to see specialists at Memorial Health via cameras and the internet.

The hospital will be one of 40 places around Georgia to have the specialized equipment.

"What that specialist can do is often diagnose what is wrong with the patient, while the local family doctor can treat that patient with direction from the specialist, and you get to stay in your community," said Oxendine.

The telemedicine equipment and training is being provided through a grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield. The program is a three-year initiative that will cost more than $11 million.
