Col. Steven Westgate with the Savannah-based 165th Airlift Wing of the Georgia National Guard is rising in the ranks. Westgate's father, 91-year-old retired Navy captain Reland Westgate, pinned the general's star on his son last night at the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum.
It's a milestone in Gen. Westgate's career and life. "It's like your last flight as an aviator, it's like getting married," he said. "It's all about to happen, you can't control it. It just unwinds and you get into that moment."
Currently, now-Brig. Gen. Westgate is on temporary duty as a battle commander for NORAD, the North American Aerospace Defense Command, stationed in Florida. But his home and family are here in the Coastal Empire.
