Tybee Welcome Home Celebration

Tybee honored the 48th Brigade's 648th Engineer Battalion Alpha Company at Jaycee Park. Tybee honored the 48th Brigade's 648th Engineer Battalion Alpha Company at Jaycee Park.

People on Tybee Island are very proud of their residents who answer the call to serve our country, so much so, they're not only welcoming home one of their own; they've extended the homecoming to include his whole company.

After being deployed for nearly a year in Iraq, the Alpha Company, 648th Engineer Battalion, 48th Brigade, Georgia Army National Guard is finally home. Tybee Island along with Tybee Island Adopt a Soldier wanted to throw these soldiers a celebration at Jaycee Park that they wouldn't forget.

"We're here to let them know how much we appreciate them," said Lawanna Tsoulos with Adopt A Soldier.

That's not the only reason for the celebration.  The company's Captain, Jason Ball, is a Tybee native and the community wanted to give him and his soldiers a proper welcome home.

"It's great!  I mean just to have the support," said Staff Sergeant Ray Aylor, "It's heartfelt. It really is."

Captain Ball said he wouldn't expect anything less of his community.

"Tybee Island hasn't really changed," he explained. "It's still a hometown community, probably the best kept secret in the southeast."

The celebration started out with an awards ceremony, but ended with a family style American barbeque.

"This is so important that we let our troops and all our soldiers know just how important they are to the security and safety of our nation and the world," said Tsoulos.

The celebration not only recognized the soldiers but also the soldier's families who made it through this deployment.  The soldiers said they wouldn't have made it this far without the support.
