New Garrison Commander for Fort Stewart

It's the military way: a few years in one place doing one job, then it's off to new challenges. We're in the middle of the transitions for the Third Infantry Division.

Three years ago, Fort Stewart held a ceremony welcoming garrison commander Col. John Kidd. Now he is moving on, passing the torch to Col. Todd Buchs.

"It's hard to describe the feeling, but it's an honor," said Col. Buchs.

Wednesday morning, Fort Stewart held another ceremony officially passing the command of the garrison to Col. Buchs.

"I'm not particularly sad, because this is the normal course of things," said Col. Kidd. "Change in the Army is what it's all about."

Col. Kidd knows change very well. Over the years, he has worked to transform Fort Stewart into a modern installation,  something he says he knows will continue after he leaves.

Buchs will pick up where Kidd left off, continuing to work on the physical infrastructure of the base as well as providing support to soldiers overseas and their families at home.

"I want to build off what John did here," he said. "He's done a terrific job here. I have to get my arms around the organization and what he's done, but I just plan on building on his success."

Knowing that Fort Stewart will continue to grow and improve is exactly why Col. Kidd says he can leave happy. But before leaving, he has one message for the community: "I want them to continue to love our soldiers here. That sounds easy to do. Sometimes it's a little tough, because some of them are a little unlovable, but I want them to continue to support the community here."

As for what the future looks like for Col. Kidd, he is moving on to work for Place Properties in Atlanta, where he will develop properties in the Southeast.
