Imagine spending your whole summer working at a health center. For free. Sixteen-year-old Nikky Olubajo isn't spending her summer relaxing or working a summer job. Instead she is volunteering more than 30 hours a week at the JC Lewis Health Center in Savannah.
She answers phones, helps file patients' records and helps out with whatever needs to be done. Why? "Volunteering is a nice thing to do I really like to volunteer," she said.
Nikky knew she wanted to volunteer somewhere, so she came to the health center, and two years later she is still there.
"You just help cause it feels good," she said.
Dodie Simmons, the clinic director, says they are so thankful to have Nikky around. "We absolutely adore her the staff loves her," Simmons said. "The patients love her and everyone who walks in the door loves her. Real bright and sweet, just real helpful."
And Nikky loves them. "Everyone who works here is really nice and I just really like it here," she told us.
Ask anyone there and they'll tell you finding someone as dedicated as Nikky is no easy task.
"I don't know anyone in town that has a teen that volunteers pretty much their whole summer to work for free," noted Simmons.
And that's what makes Nikky Olubajo this week's WTOC Top Teen.
Nikky's planning on college, and a medical career.
