Change of Command for Sixth Marine Corps District

Col. Michael Oehl Col. Michael Oehl

Big changes on Parris Island today. Col. Michael Oehl took command of the Sixth Marine Corps District. The district includes most of the Southeast, from Tennessee to Florida, and American islands in the Caribbean.

He's a former deputy chief of staff of the NATO School in Oberammergau, Germany, and looking forward to living in the Low Country and helping make new Marines.

"I'm also looking forward to the taking on the challenge of recruiting, because without successful recruiting, the Marine Corps would fail to exist," he said.

Col. Oehl replaces Col. William Leek. Leek is heading for his next assignment in Iraq. He says, by this time next week, he'll have sand in his boots.
