A brother and sister were rewarded by the US Army today for saving a man after he nearly drowned to death on Tybee Island a week ago.

Darlene Lorens was vacationing with her brother, Henri Lamont of the Aviation Brigade at Hunter Army Airfield, when she noticed a man had been caught in the undertow. When the victim was brought to shore, Lorens, a nurse for 25 years, performed chest compressions as Lamont cleared his airway.

Lorens was presented with a certificate of appreciation. Lamont received an Army commendation medal.

"It's really an honor to receive the award, but I don't feel deserving of it," said Lamont. "When things happen you do what you know you need to do to save a person, to help a person and that's basically all my sister and I were doing." s

It is important for everyone to realize the undertow at Tybee Island is very strong and you should always swim with a buddy.
