Hometown Hero--Sandra Edwards

She's a Hesse Elementary School crossing guard, and five days a week she makes sure students are safe when they are walking to and from school, just one of the many reasons Sandra Edwards is a WTOC Hometown Hero.

Chances are, if you're in a school zone, you will see crossing guards like Edwards either stopping traffic or blowing their whistle to get traffic to slow down.

For six years now, Edwards has been doing everything she can to make sure these kids make it across busy Whitfield Avenue.

"I'm going to do it as long as I got breath in my body these children mean more to me than anything else," said Edwards.

Edwards said, while she loves her job, it can be challenging, especially when drivers speed through the school zone.

"It is ridiculous the way they come here in the morning time and it doesn't take but two to three minutes for them to slow down through the school zone," said Edwards.

She's even had a couple of close calls. "I'm out in the street with the stop sign and they'll come right on still as I'm crossing with the children."

A tough job, but something she feels obligated to do for the children safety.

"I want to make sure their safe and I'm safe and the cars are safe. The only thing they got to go is 25mph," said Edwards.

She said it is a simple thing to ask, but something Edwards says drivers rarely do. "Whatever they are trying to get to the building is going to be there," said Edwards.

So if you're traveling down Whitfield Avenue near Hesse Elementary, make sure you give this hometown hero a big wave.
