Top Teacher--John Sutlive

John Sutlive John Sutlive

Although it was written back in 1879, Henrik Ibsen's "A Doll's House" still raises quite a discussion, especially in John Sutlive's class at Savannah Arts Academy, where he has taught senior English courses for eight years now.

"My mother always instilled reading in us as children and so there were always books around the house and I enjoyed reading and I was always strong with literature and reading comprehension and through high school I just gravitated towards the discipline," said Sutlive.

Sutlive's English classes are a little more in-depth than the norm.

That's because, as he does each year, he prepares his senior class for the advanced placement finals in May, by reading, analyzing, and comparing various classic pieces of literature in a fun way.

But when asked what is his favorite work-

"I guess it couldn't be the sports page could it," said Sutlive.

Actually, he says although he has many favorites, he would have to say Harper Lee's "To Kill A Mockingbird."

But one thing he doesn't joke about- what he hopes his students will take away from his class once they graduate and head out into the world.

"A continued love of reading and an appreciation of the writing process," said Sutlive.

And it's his continued dedication to show the importance and fun of simply picking up a good book every once in a while that makes him a WTOC top teacher.
