"Yes, WETHERBEE is my real last name," says "Big" John Wetherbee. "And I have always been a ‘weather geek', chasing storms while trying to serve others with life-saving information on TV and the radio."
Now he is proud to lead the First Alert Weather Team at WTOC-TV, working together with Dave Turley, Jamie Ertle, Ron Wallace and Cutter Martin to bring you the most up-to-date and accurate weather forecast for the Coastal Empire and South Carolina Lowcountry.
Sealed and certified as a broadcast meteorologist, John also happens to be a 37-year radio veteran as programmer, performer, seller and manager. "They never let me into the shop, which was probably a good thing when you start so young."
His radio resume includes RKO Radio, Shamrock, AMFM, Chancellor Media, Taft Broadcasting and, for the last seven years, Clear Channel Radio.
His television resume started at WRCB in Chattanooga, then weekender and Chief at the Atlanta CBS TV station for Tribune and Meredith.
He is a four-time forecaster-of-the-year, serving on the National Weather Association's certification board for the last four years, Emmy-award winning and former AMS local chapter president.
Plus he serves up to 20 radio weather clients around the country with his RADIO WEATHER SERVICE. "I get to be a part of so many great morning shows from right here in Savannah."
Big John is currently operations manager for the six-station Clear Channel Radio cluster, program director for NewsRadio 1290 WTKS, music director and afternoon host for 98.7 The River, "and I do the floors!"
John and his wife are proud parents of three daughters and one son-in-law, all working toward college degrees. There's a dog, two cats and three fish.
