Time has run out for Saddam Hussein. Iraqi TV stations are reporting the former Iraqi dictator was executed by hanging just before 10pm EST on Friday for murdering Shiite Muslims nearly 25 years ago. The U.S. handed over Saddam to Iraqi authorities shortly before his execution.

An advisor to Iraq's prime minister said Saddam did not want the execution postponed, even though his lawyer tried to file a delay earlier on Friday night. Saddam's half-brother and the former chief justice of the revolutionary court were also put to death by hanging after Saddam. Saddam was executed at an undisclosed location. American troops are preparing for what's expected to be an uprise in violence.

Saddam's death comes nearly four years after President Bush first ordered him out of Iraq in March 2003. In July 2003, Saddam's sons, Uday and Qusay were killed by coalition forces. Later in December 2003, Saddam was captured near his hometown of Tikrit. In July 2004, he pleaded innocent to crimes of mass killings. In October 2005, Saddam went on trial for killing 150 Iraqis. He was found guilty and sentenced to death by hanging in November 2006.
