COLUMBIA, S.C. - Mario Chalmers had 19 points and Darrell Arthur 17 as Number Nine Kansas won its seventh straight with a 70-54 victory over South Carolina today.
Chalmers had 13 of his points in the first half when the Jayhawks opened a 14-point lead while Arthur made eight of 12 shots from the field to keep Kansas comfortably ahead.
South Carolina had hoped to continue a six-game winning streak of its own and got a boost when leading scorer Tre Kelley returned from a left knee sprained that caused him to miss a victory over Western Carolina earlier this week.
But Chalmers and the Jayhawks disrupted Kelley throughout, holding him to 10 points on three of 16 shooting.
The effort helped Kansas escape with the win on a weekend filled with upsets. Dwayne Day led the Gamecocks with 13 points.
