It's not every day firefighters set a house on fire on purpose, except when they're doing it to learn how to fight fires better. On Saturday afternoon, Southside Firefighters burned a house on Johnny Mercer Boulevard as part of a training exercise. The homeowner donated the house for the cause.
Southside firefighters say training with a real house is the best way to learn how to fight a fire. This way, they say, if they need to go to your house, they'll be ready.
"You actually get to see how the wood burns and how the layers build up inside a wood burning house and how the fire travels inside a wood house," explained Southside Assistant Fire Chief Hugh Futrell. "It's a lot more realistic training for firefighters."
