Savannah Missions Group Packs for Journey

A Savannah missions group is packing up for the journey of a lifetime. Volunteers with Faith in Practice from St. Joseph Candler spent Saturday morning at Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church, filling up box after box with medical supplies for the medical missions trip to Antigua, Guatemala next month. They're packing up antibiotics, vitamins and other medications as well as storage containers full of surgical supplies.

The group of surgeons, nurses and other volunteers expect to treat thousands of patients during their two week stay. Sister Margaret Beatty, a Sister of Mercy from St. Joseph Candler said she was excited to be part of the team.

"Really, it's a privilege to serve God's people in a different part of the world," she explained. "Of course, it's always a privilege to serve God's people, but particularly to serve in a whole different culture and environment and help people who are really, really needy."

WTOC will have more on their trip during the coming weeks.

A Savannah woman is giving back to the homeless community and making them look good in the process. Besty Rothman hosted her third annual event helping at the old Savannah city mission on Bull Street today. She and a team of volunteers gave free haircuts, manicures, warm meals, and much more to people who stopped by.  Rothman, a licensed cosmetologist, said she organized the event to honor her late sister and to give back to the community.
