Eagles Land Big Class

STATESBORO, Ga. (AP) - Georgia Southern coach Chris Hatcher ended up with more commitments than days available for recruiting.

Hatcher was hired as the Eagles' head coach in mid-January. He said he and his staff had only 10 days to convince prospects that Statesboro was the right place for them to play football. Today, they came away with 22 signees.

The Eagles picked up 10 offensive players, eight on defense, three listed as athletes and one kicker. Six signed with Georgia Southern and began classes for the spring semester. The recruits -- three transfers, two prep schoolers and one freshmen -- will be eligible to start practice in the spring.

Hatcher replaced coach Brian VanGorder a few days after VanGorder surprisingly stepped down to become linebacker coach for the Atlanta Falcons on January 16th. Hatcher's recruits include Charwell Brown of Coffeeville Community College, Lee Chappele of Greater Atlanta Christian and Robert Toombs Christian Academy's Jordan Delk, who previously had committed to Navy.

Hatcher said Delk will play receiver. He helped the Crusaders win two state titles, catching 32 passes for 532 yards and nine touchdowns.

Brown earned first team All-Kansas Jayhawk Community College conference honors. At defensive end, he recorded 46 tackles, four sacks and two forced fumbles. Chappele led the Spartans with a school record 19-hundred yards and 17 touchdowns, with only four interceptions. The quarterback finished his career in high school by throwing for 49-hundred yards and 49 touchdowns.
