Watch out where you park your car tonight. It may not be there in the morning. Certain downtown Savannah streets will be off limits to parking as of 6am Saturday morning.
The St. Patrick's Day Parade staging areas are in and around Forsyth Park. There is no parking on city streets in an area around the park from Henry Street down to Gaston Street and Whitaker Street over to Habersham. If you live in that region, make sure your vehicles are off the streets.
The city has been warning residents in this area since Wednesday, leaving fliers on cars. If you don't move your car by 6am, it will be towed. Parking services director Jim Gilliamson calls towing a necessary evil.
"We don't want to do it," Gilliamson said. "It's just it's not what we want to do, we don't want to leave a bad taste in people's mouths. We want them to enjoy the event."
Instead, Gilliamson hopes people obey the signs and avoid hassle and towing fees.
At 6am, tow trucks parked at the visitor's center will be sent out to move any cars still on the streets designated as parade staging areas.
