Police Deal with Massive, but Manageable Crowds on River Street

Savannah-Chatham police officers stayed busy this weekend. Every officer was working, many of them on 12-hour shifts.

Assistant Chief Willie Lovett credited his officers for keeping the record crowd under control.

"This is the first time in my 34 years that I've actually seen people shoulder to shoulder from one end of River Street to the other, so I think the 700,000 that we thought would be here, made it," Lovett said.

SCMPD said it didn't see any major problems. As of yesterday evening, officers arrested 223 people, mostly for small offenses like underage drinking, public urination and disorderly conduct.
