Nicole Shuman stands five feet, eleven inches tall. So her kindergarten class at Reidsville Elementary School looks up to her - both literally and figuratively. "I think I'm the tallest kindergarten teacher out there," said Shuman. And from the smiles of her 19 students, she is the most fun teacher as well.
"I've always enjoyed working with children ever since I was in middle school and high school. I always helped in summer camps and after school programs," said Shuman. "And I did a program my senior year where I went to an elementary school for two hours each morning, and it was then that I decided that I wanted to be in education."
The students, along with many of their parents, appreciate her decision. She is known for teaching more than the basics- she teaches character, which she believes is important as she helps to lay the foundation of their futures.
"We have a really good time, but I promise you, these children have learned respect in this room, these children have learned manners and they have learned discipline and I hope that they carry those qualities with them through first, second, third, fourth and fifth grades because I believe that those things are just as important as the curriculum and standards that I have to teach," said Shuman.
So for her willingness to go beyond the norm while having a good time, Nicole Shuman is a WTOC Top Teacher.
