Chief Jim Price of the Tybee Island Police Department says recent warm weather has led to more people on the beach earlier than usual, and unfortunately, what the department calls a "dramatic upsurge" in reports of underage drinking.

On each of the past three weekends, police have arrested about 60 juveniles, mostly for drinking and fighting, and Chief Price wants it to stop.

"We just want to put the message out that we're not going to tolerate it," he told us. "That you will be arrested, taken off the beach, jailed. And you will have to post bond."

The department is deploying the beach patrol every day to enforce its zero-tolerance policy. They also encourage minors to appreciate the recreational opportunities on the island without breaking the law.
