Officials say someone in America calls a poison control center every 14 seconds. So, a toll-free number has been established to connect callers from anywhere in the country with poison control centers in their area.
The president of the American Association of Poison Control Centers calls it "an important advance" in public health. Poisoning emergencies affect children of all ages, but particularly those under the age of six.
The number of the poison control hot line is 1-800-222-1222.
