Early-morning commuters had to take it a little slow on a stretch of I-16 Thursday morning. That's because around 3:45am, the drivers of a trash truck heading west on the interstate smelled something burning and found out their full load of trash was on fire.
Instead of losing their truck, they dumped the burning garbage in the emergency lane between Dean Forest Road and I-95.
Pooler and Garden City firefighters kept the blaze from spreading, but it took some time to get the fire completely out and clean up. Until then, traffic was reduced to one lane on I-16 West between Dean Forest and I-95.
The lane reopened about 7:30am.
