Tybee Veterans, Council Discuss Memorial

Tybee Island veterans know how they want their monument that honors military veterans to look, now they're trying to find a place to put it. The American Legion Post 154 unveiled their plans earlier this month. Personalized bricks will make up the foundation for the monument, honoring veterans from each conflict. They want to build it in Memorial Park. The trouble is finding a place away from the traffic and one that won't interfere with parking.

"I think Memorial Park would be good. Memorial Park was dedicated as a memorial park after World War II to honor veterans," said Tybee Island Mayor Jason Buelterman. "We have a very small monument out there right now to honor the veterans who fought from Tybee in foreign wars. That seems to me to be the appropriate place to put it, but it's just a matter of where in the park to put it."

The American Legion Post 154 is expected to discuss the issue with Tybee city council members at their 7pm meeting tonight. The memorial is expected to cost about $150,000 to build.
