Beaufort Co. Closes Damaged Bridge for Repairs

The bridge is expected to be closed to all but limited traffic for three months. The bridge is expected to be closed to all but limited traffic for three months.

Expect some major traffic delays in South Carolina. South Carolina Department of Transportation officials have closed down the McTeer Bridge between Port Royal and Lady's Island to most traffic for the next three months. They said it will take that long to repair the bridge.

On Thursday night, a barge with a boom crane struck the bridge's support beams. The replacement parts will have to be specially made, a process that could take several weeks.

The Beaufort County Traffic Management Center is only allowing limited traffic on the bridge. From 6 to 9am, traffic from Lady's Island will be allowed to cross over to Port Royal. From 3 to 6pm, traffic from Port Royal will be allowed to drive to Lady's Island. Those are the only times the McTeer Bridge will be open. Drivers will have to take the other connecting route, the Woods Bridge, between the two communities at all other times.
