Latest Traffic Changes for Lady's Island Commuters

Traffic will now be allowed down one lane of the McTeer Bridge. Traffic will now be allowed down one lane of the McTeer Bridge.

New traffic changes are on the way for drivers commuting to and from Lady's Island. Beginning Tuesday morning, one lane of the McTeer Bridge, connecting Lady's Island and Port Royal will be open to traffic.

The lanes will alternate in direction from 6am to 11am and again from 1pm to 6:30pm. The lane reversal on the Woods Bridge to Beaufort will be eliminated.

This has been an on-going operation for emergency workers in Beaufort since a crane on a barge damaged the bridge a little more than a week ago.

Traffic going to and coming from Lady's Island is a real headache for drivers and for emergency workers. They're working long hours, trying to keep traffic moving. But making things even more difficult is that this happened right after another emergency.

"We started ever since the mishap with the Blue Angel, so we've been in emergency operations since that point," said Emergency Management director, William Winn.

"It's been non-stop for the past 14-15 days and I don't see it changing anytime soon," said Beaufort County sheriff P.J. Tanner.

With the bridge repairs expected to take three months, emergency crews are working overtime to keep the tens of thousands of people driving on and off Lady's Island moving smoothly.

"The traffic management center has been moved to seven days a week from 5:30 am till we get done at night," said Winn.

Local law enforcement agencies, the county, and the municipalities in the area are working hand in hand to get it done as quickly as possible. The state has even sent three new traffic cameras and extra highway patrol officers to help make things move smoothly.

"Having extra troopers on hand allows us to pull deputies off these traffic points and put them out in the community to patrol and do everything they do," said Sheriff Tanner.

All in an effort to keep everyone safe as they get through this latest headache.

Here is some more important information for folks who use the McTeer and Woods Memorial bridges.

The lane reversals for the Woods Bridge are no longer in effect. Meridian Road is open with no traffic restrictions. The main entrance to Beaufort High, Highway 21 is still closed and folks need to use Youmans Drive to get to the school and only cars and pick-ups not towing anything will be allowed on the Mcteer Bridge.
