Candy Parker has been teaching second graders now for seven years at Smiley Elementary School in Ludowici.
Actually, she believes second grade is perhaps the best grade to teach.
"They're not babies, but they're not grown yet," said Parker. "They're very teachable. They're very, very teachable. They want to learn and they love being here. And that's what I try to do, I try to make it fun and they want to come everyday."
And it works because she says her 21 students are rarely absent.
So Ms. Parker takes advantage of every moment she has with them- and that even includes lessons on the playground.
"A lot of it on the playground is manners, and how you want to treat others the way you want to be treated," said Parker. "That's mostly what we teach them on the playground. Now, at lunch, we talk about pints, cups, about how much the serving is and stuff like that. When they are having fun and don't realize it, it seems to stick with them than like if you are standing there talking in front of a room, teaching a lesson. That might go in one ear and out the other but when they're actually doing something, it sticks with them."
She says she loves seeing the progress of her students from the beginning of the year until the end.
"I love kids and I love helping them and I treat all of them as if they were mine," said Parker.
And it is for her providing love, learning, and fun at the same time that makes Candy Parker this week's WTOC Top Teacher.
