Beaufort City Council Taking Extra Steps to Help Downtown Businesses

Damage to the McTeer Bridge is not only causing traffic issues on Lady's Island, its also halted to a lot of foot traffic at shops in downtown Beaufort.

But as traffic gets better so does business downtown on Bay Street. To help bring more tourist and locals downtown while the bridge is being repaired, The Beaufort City Council is going to lift the parking meter fees along bay street and is giving Main Street Beaufort an extra 15-thousand dollars to promote the downtown area with a new advertising campaign.

" I think it will definitely help. It's an effort to help things improve and it certainly can't do any harm. We can use all the help we can get right now."

While getting to downtown Beaufort is much easier than a week ago, some local merchants tell us they would still like to see more access to Bay Street.
