New Way To Help Smokers Quit

Imagine putting down your cigarettes for good by putting a magnet behind your ear. Sounds strange, but some people say it's helped them kick the habit.

Marla Sincoff smoked for 20 years and tried almost everything to stop. "I've tried the gum, cold turkey, the patch," she said.

But Marla claims she's no longer smoking, thanks to a little magnet placed on the ear, called Zerosmoke. Health officials said it works like acupuncture, but without the needles.

Like other forms of acupuncture or acupressure, Zerosmoke is supposed to decrease cravings by triggering the release of endorphins, feel good chemicals in the brain. But there is little clinical evidence acupuncture works and less is known about the magnets.

Addiction Expert, Doctor Romanos said you also have to want to quit. "In some cases it's been very, very good. In other cases other people said, 'you know I've tried it and it doesn't really work,'" said Dr. Romanos.

The magnets used in Zerosmoke are pretty powerful and it's that strength that's applied to the pressure point behind the ear that's supposedly helping people quit. Health officials at Memorial Health said they don't offer Zerosmoke, but they do have stop smoking classes, as does St. Joseph's Candler.
