All Positions At Spencer Elementary School Vacated, New Principal Assigned

The following is a media advisory from the Chatham County Board of Education:

As you know from the Board Docs portion of our website, a number of recent personnel moves have been approved by our School Board as requested by Dr. Lockamy. One of those moves involves moving Mrs. Andrea Williams from Garden City Elementary School to Spencer Elementary.

Dr. Lockamy has also announced that all positions at Spencer will be vacated effective July 1st. Attached you will find the verbiage of a letter to each employee at Spencer as notification of the staffing changes and how it will effect them.

In short, no one currently employed in good standing at Spencer Elementary School has lost their jobs. All current employees will have the opportunity to reapply for their positions or elect to accept a transfer to other schools or facilities in the district.

Mrs. Andrea Williams has expressed a fervent interest in seeing the "best and brightest" staff apply to work at Spencer Elementary School and its Children's Engineering Academy.

All of the positions will soon be posted through the district's Human Resources department.

The moves transpiring at Spencer Elementary School are indicative of the strong commitment of Dr. Lockamy, the School Board and the school administration in developing a World Class educational system for all students.

The verbiage of Dr. Lockamy's letter is attached below.

One of my primary responsibilities as Superintendent of Schools is to eliminate the achievement gap. It is my belief that every child can achieve at high levels. While many of our schools are making progress, some are not improving as quickly as I would like.

As you may know, Spencer Elementary was the only elementary school in the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System that failed to make Adequate Yearly Progress in School Year 2005-2006. Based on preliminary achievement results and the events of the current school year, I believe it is now necessary to reconstitute Spencer Elementary in preparation for next school year.
Therefore, effective immediately, I am declaring all positions at Spencer Elementary school vacant effective July 1, 2007. Employees who wish to remain at Spencer for school year 2007-2008 may reapply for any position for which they are qualified. Those who do not wish to reapply or who are not selected to remain at Spencer will be administratively placed in other comparable positions in the district for which they are qualified.
This action is not intended to reflect on any individual employee. Thank you for your dedicated service to the children of the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System.

Sincerely,

Thomas B. Lockamy, Jr., Ed. D.
Superintendent of Schools
